The Western Mass Microsoft Technology Users Group is hosting a monthly meeting on Thursday, January 27th at 5:00 PM at Financial Partners in Agawam, MA. Free pizza and drinks will be provided compliments of Financial Partners. Attendance is always free and open to anyone interested in learning about Microsoft technologies. Directions are below.

Presentation Abstract:

Developing Websites with WebMatrix : Chris Bowen

WebMatrix is a new, free web development tool including a complete web platform to help you use Windows to easily create websites.  Whether you start from scratch, a template, or use an open source application to get started quickly, WebMatrix can help.  You’ll see WebMatrix in action and we’ll cover the underlying technologies, including IIS Express, ASP.NET Web Pages, and SQL Server Compact.  We’ll also talk about the new “Razor” programming syntax and transitioning to ASP.NET MVC and Visual Studio.

Developing Cloud Applications With Windows Azure : Jim O'Neil
For all its hype, Cloud Computing appears to be the biggest thing since sliced bread, but for many it’s a topic they haven’t been able to fully digest quite yet.   We’ll first take a look at the types of applications that are prime for cloud computing (and those that aren’t!), and then show how Windows Azure and development tooling support in Visual Studio (and beyond) ease your transition from building on-premises applications to targeting the cloud.

About the Presenter(s):

Chris:

I am a Principal Developer Evangelist for Microsoft, working with the developer communities in the New England and upstate New York areas.  My role involves educating customers on development topics, working with user groups and other community organizations, staying technically deep with our development platform and tools, serving as a pipeline between the various product development teams and our customers, and in general fostering a great development community.

I joined Microsoft having worked as an architect and lead developer at a variety of area companies.  I am also co-author of "Essential Windows Communication Foundation" [Addison-Wesley] and "Professional Visual Studio Team System" [WROX].  I hold a B.S. in Management Information Systems and an M.S. in Computer Science, both from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).

I'm certainly passionate about computers, programming, and technology, but I also enjoy craft beer, PC and XBox gaming, (being bad at) golf, music, reading and, above all, time with my wife and our two daughters.

Jim:
Jim is a Developer Evangelist for Microsoft who covers the Northeast District (namely, New England and upstate New York) along with his colleague Chris Bowen.  His overall focus is to engage with the development community in the area through user groups, code camps, barcamps, Microsoft-speaking events, etc., and just in general serve as ambassador for Microsoft.  Over the past year or so, Jim has been focusing on software development scenarios using cloud computing and Windows Azure.

Jim joined Microsoft in April 2008 after nearly 12 years working for Sybase in a support and sales consultant role for its developer tools, namely PowerBuilder and EAServer.  Prior to that he worked on various DoD projects at MITRE (Bedford, MA) and BDM International (in McLean, VA, now subsumed by Northrop Grumman).  Jim received in B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science from Austin Peay State University in 1985 and his M.S. in Computer Science from Duke University in 1987
